Microsoft changes Vista EULA amid criticism

Windows Vista Team Blog : News: Revision to Windows Vista retail licensing terms

Several reviews (SecurityFocus, InfoWorld, HEXUS ) of the EULA for Microsoft’s forthcoming Vista OS have been so scathing as to cause MS to rethink their intent. The company released a reworded version of the EULA on the Vista Team Blog which drew a collective sigh of relief from the computer enthusiast community. However, a number of issues still remain. MS still restricts use of Vista within a virtual machine except on the $400 Ultimate edition. It is also unclear how the various upgrade options will effect a users ability to transfer Vista to another machine. Clearly MS needs to iron out some of these issues before Vista goes RTM.

Bot nets go mainstream

Bot nets likely behind jump in spam

The more I looked at the spam problems I was experiencing, the more I noticed my initial theory was wrong. The same spam posts were coming in from everywhere from Asia, to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South America. Blocking IP space isn’t entirely effective either. I’ve already got some ideas for real solutions I can implement on my end, but what about the source? Vulnerable machines are at the heart of the issue. Automatic updating has helped, but obviously falls far short of a solution.

Firefox 2.0 released

Mozilla Releases Major Update to Firefox and Raises the Bar for Online Experience

The Mozilla foundation released Firefox 2.0 today. This latest release brings several new features. Among them, spell check for text entered into forms and anti-phishing technology. One of the coolest features, however is its ability to recover your session state in the event of a crash. It not only puts you back where you were, but even remembers the entire browsing history of each tab. Also, this is the first Firefox I’ve used in a while that plays well with my tablet pc. (thanks to GeckoTIP) In fact, I wrote this entire article with FF2.0 & GeckoTIP on my tablet. I may just have to try this more often. 😉 If you haven’t taken a look at Firefox lately, it may be time to check it out. This looks to be the best version yet.
