I’ve wanted an iPod Nano since it first came out. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and I love it! Apple’s new mighty mite is every bit as capable as its larger siblings. In fact, the software image appears to be roughly the same as the iPod photo. The best thing about it is the memory Apple used. Transfer speeds are faster than any flash drive I’ve used. However, one thing that is disapointing is the lack of firewire support. (it will charge via firewire however) ArsTechnica has a great article where they disect a 2GB Nano to see what makes it tick.
It looks like all dock-connector iPod’s are not equal. I bought a Belkin car charger with built-in pre-amp that was labeled as “Nano Compatible.” I had the TuneCast II FM transmitter already, so I was all set, or so I thought. When I plugged in the Nano, it did indeed get a charge, but no music came out. When I got home, I pulled out my 40GB 4th Gen iPod and hooked it up and everything worked perfectly. I’ve heard the Monster charge/transmitter cable does indeed work with the Nano, so I’m going to trade the Belkin for that. We’ll see how that goes.
For anyone that’s interested, I did get the Monster charge/transmitter cable and it does indeed work for the Nano. It’s so much better than the Belkin product. You get to preset 3 different channels to transmit on, so if you’re on a long trip and suddenly get interference on one, you can switch to one of the other 2. What a great design! The only thing I would recommend with this product would be one of those anti-slip pads for your dashboard, or one of the many ipod cradle devices. The pads are usually sold for cellphones, but they work great even on the lightweight Nano.
