{"id":177,"date":"2006-08-22T09:52:57","date_gmt":"2006-08-22T13:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clay.blogdns.net\/?p=177"},"modified":"2006-08-22T09:52:57","modified_gmt":"2006-08-22T13:52:57","slug":"winternals-aquired-by-microsoft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/claymccauley.info\/index.php\/2006\/08\/22\/winternals-aquired-by-microsoft\/","title":{"rendered":"Winternals aquired by Microsoft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While this isn&#8217;t exactly hot off the press, (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/press\/2006\/jul06\/07-18WinternalsPR.mspx\">press release<\/a> came out in July) I thought some of you might find it interesting.  <a href=\"http:\/\/winternals.com\">Winternals<\/a>, the company run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sysinternals.com\/AboutUs.html\">Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell<\/a> was aquired by Microsoft.  Mark and Bryce also have a companion site called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sysinternals.com\">Sysinternals<\/a> that contains a wealth of useful freeware utilities.  Many of the freeware programs also come with source code allowing interested software programmers to make modifications.  The recent aquisition has been a cause for some fearmongoring on sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\/articles\/06\/07\/18\/1545258.shtml\">Slashdot<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&#038;rls=en&#038;q=winternals+%2B+sysinternals+%2B+mirror&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;oe=UTF-8\">others<\/a>.  While I&#8217;d like to believe that Microsoft will allow Mark and Bryce to keep the Sysinternals site available, I have to admit I downloaded a copy of every one of the utilities just in case.  I honestly think this aquisition is a win for Mark and Bryce as well as for Microsoft.  These are 2 of the brightest windows developers around and their combined experience can only serve to improve the quality of Microsoft&#8217;s products.
